Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): Headspace gas concentrations of IODP Hole 386-M0095A
| Abstract: |
Headspace (HS) gas concentrations of the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). The offshore phase of this expedition took place between 2021-04-13 and 2021-06-01 onboard Japanese R/V Kaimei from and to Yokosuka, Japan, followed by an onshore phase onboard D/V Chikyu between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15. Following standard protocols for headspace sampling, all headspace samples were collected onboard (offshore) from the base of each section immediately after section cutting following core recovery on deck. Two parallel headspace samples (IODP standard and requested samples) were collected from the bottom of every GPC core section, the longest core from each site, and the respective shorter trigger core. For each headspace double sample, ~5 cm³ of sediment was collected (using two 2.5 cm³ tip-cut syringes). Each 2.5 cm³ headspace sample was then added to a 20 mL crimp vial with 5 mL of 1 M NaOH. Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): Line scan images of IODP Hole 386-M0091B
| Abstract: |
Collection of line scan images from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). The offshore phase of this expedition took place between 2021-04-13 and 2021-06-01 onboard Japanese R/V Kaimei from and to Yokosuka, Japan. Images were obtained during the onshore phase of the expedition, which took place between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15 onboard D/V Chikyu. After longitudinal splitting high-resolution (100 pixels/cm) images of each core sections archive half was captured using the Tri-Sensor Core Logger (TSCL; NS Design). The camera provides a 16-bit red-green-blue color (48-bit) TIFF file, which were converted to JPG files for publication purposes. The RGB data derived from each image for each section are published under titles "Color data (RGB) of IODP Hole 386-M0091B". […] |

Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): P-wave velocity of discrete samples (DPW) from IODP Hole 386-M0084C
| Abstract: |
P-wave velocity data from discrete samples from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). During the onshore phase of expedition 386, which took place between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15 onboard D/V Chikyu, discrete samples for P-wave velocity measurements were taken from the work halves approx. every 2 meter down core using syringes with an inner diameter of 2 cm. Samples measured 2.5–3 cm long for a sample volume of ~10 cubic centimetres. Samples were then shipped to the European Petrophysics Consortium (EPC) laboratory at the University of Leicester (UK) for processing. Measurements were performed with a Geotek P-wave logger for discrete samples (PWL-D). Measurements were attempted for each sample, however, the unconsolidated lithology of some samples proved unsuitable for the instrument (e.g. too soupy or too friable to be placed between the transducers). Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): Shear strength (handheld penetrometer) from IODP Hole 386-M0090B
| Abstract: |
Shear strength from handheld penetrometer of the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). This dataset was obtained at the end of the core processing workflow during the third phase (Personal Sampling Party, PSP) of expedition 386, which took place between 2022-11-15 – 2022-11-30 onboard D/V Chikyu. Measurements were performed on the work halves of core sections using a handheld (pocket) penetrometer equipped with a 10 mm diameter tip. The tip was pushed 6.3 mm perpendicular to the split core surface with the measuring pin downward until the groove marked on the tip was even with the level of the core surface. The resulting resistance (compressive strength) was read from the device and used to calculate undrained shear strength. At each measurement depth, three measurements were conducted and the resulting undrained shear strength averaged. […] |

Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): Physical properties (MSCL) of IODP Hole 386-M0081B
| Abstract: |
Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL) data (P-wave velocity, gamma ray attenuation (GRA) density, magnetic susceptibility, natural gamma radiation (NGR), noncontact resistivity (NCR)) from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). These data were obtained from whole round core sections by means of a Geotek MSCL during the offshore phase of the expedition. The offshore phase of expedition 386 took place between 2021-04-13 and 2021-06-01 onboard Japanese R/V Kaimei from and to Yokosuka, Japan. As the aforementioned parameters are sensitive to temperature core sections were stored for at least 6 hours after arrival on deck before measurement to allow for temperature equilibration. The core physical properties were measured at predetermined optimal instrument-based spatial and temporal sampling intervals. […] |

Strasser, M; Ikehara, K; Everest, JD et al. (2025): Color Reflectance (Spectrophotometer) of IODP Hole 386-M0093B
| Abstract: |
Color reflectance spectrophotometry and colorimetry data from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). The data where obtained during the onshore phase of expedition 386 which took place between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15 onboard D/V Chikyu. After longitudinal splitting of the core sections, each archive half was scanned by the Tri-Sensor Core Logger (TSCL; NS Design) including a noncontact imaging spectrophotometer (MetaVue VS3200; X-Rite), recording data at 2-cm sampling interval. The obtained data is represented in the L*a*b* color coordinate system, where L* is a total reflectance index ranging 0%–100%, a* is green (<0) to red (>0) chromaticity, and b* is blue (<0) to yellow (>0) chromaticity. L*a*b* values were transferred into RGB values using the MATLAB routine lab2rgb. […] |
